Interestingly, although salt is often portrayed as a villain, did you know that it is actually essential for our health? Our bodies require salt to function properly. Here we explore why salt is critical for health and debunk some common misconceptions surrounding salt.

1. Salt is essential for fluid balance. 

Approximately 60% of our bodies are made up of water, and salt plays a crucial role in regulating the balance of fluids in and out of our cells. Sodium, the primary component of salt, helps control the amount of water in our blood vessels, which affects blood volume and pressure. Without enough salt, we would become dehydrated, leading to symptoms like fatigue, dry mouth, and decreased urine output.

2. Salt aids in digestion. 

Salt helps to produce hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which breaks down food and kills harmful bacteria. Without enough salt, food may not be broken down properly, leading to digestive discomfort such as bloating, gas, and reflux.

3. Salt supports nerve and muscle function.

Sodium is an important electrolyte that helps conduct electrical impulses throughout our bodies. This is particularly important for nerve and muscle function, as these impulses regulate movement, sensation, and communication between cells. Without enough salt, we may experience muscle cramps, weakness, and even seizures.

4. Always choose less-processed salt. 

While salt is essential for our bodies, not all salt is created equal. Refined table salt, for example, is stripped of its natural minerals and often contains additives like anti-caking agents, which can be harmful in excess. Instead, opt for natural sea salt or Himalayan pink salt, which contain trace minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium that support health.

Salt intake should be balanced. While salt is indeed essential for our health, excessive intake can still lead to negative health consequences, such as high blood pressure and an increased risk of stroke and heart disease. The key is to consume salt in moderation and aim for a balanced diet overall. According to the American Heart Association, the recommended daily intake of salt is no more than 2,300 milligrams per day, or about 1 teaspoon.

Salt is often vilified in the media as a harmful substance, but in reality, it is essential for our bodies to function properly. From regulating our fluid balance to supporting nerve and muscle function, salt plays a crucial role in our health. While it's important to consume salt in moderation and opt for natural, unrefined sources when possible, we should not be afraid to include salt in our diets. By balancing our intake and choosing high-quality sources, we can reap the many benefits of salt without putting our health at risk.
